Sergeant Arthur L Jones

Arthur Lander Jones enlisted in the Royal Engineers. Following this he volunteered for airborne forces.

Sergeant Jones successfully completed parachute training at RAF Ringway and also Glider Pilot training and was posted to B Squadron, 1st Wing, The Glider Pilot Regiment, and took part in Operation Market Garden (Arnhem).

Sgt Jones’s glider had to make an emergency landing after being damaged by Flak near Fijnaart on 18 September. He was badly wounded and was made a POW along with five others. He was nursed for some days by Mrs Bom-van Dis in her home at Fifnaart before he died on 22 September, aged 25, and was buried in the General Cemetery at Dinteloord. He was re-interred to Bergen-Op-Zoom War Cemetery on 27 May 1946.
