Staff Sergeant Arthur L Bashforth

Arthur Lionel Bashforth was the son of Lionel and Maud Bashforth, of Hoylandswaine, Yorkshire. He enlisted in the York and Lancaster Regiment and volunteered for airborne forces.

Staff Sergeant Bashforth successfully completed Glider Pilot training and was posted to D Squadron, 8 Flight, The Glider Pilot Regiment, and took part in the second lift, Operation Market Garden (Arnhem).

S/Sgt Bashforth was killed in action on 18 September 1944, aged 26, and is commemorated on the Groesbeek Memorial to the missing.
