Lieutenant Antony R Thomas

Antony Robert Thomas, son of Martin Lewis and Eleanor Thomas, of Sydenham, London, was granted a regular commission into The King’s Own Royal Regiment in October 1940 and subsequently volunteered for airborne forces.

Lieutenant Thomas successfully completed his Glider training and was appointed to command Defence Platoon, 1st (Airborne) Battalion, The Border Regt. He took part in Operation Market Garden (Arnhem).

Lt Thomas was killed in action on 20 September 1944, aged 25. He was originally given a field burial 100 yards west of the Hartenstein Hotel, Oosterbeek, and was reinterred to Arnhem Oosterbeek War Cemetery on 10 September 1945.
