Corporal Anthony Walton

Anthony Walton, son of Gordon and Ann Walton, of Liverpool, enlisted in the Royal Army Medical Corps and volunteered for airborne forces.

Corporal Walton attended parachute course 50 at RAF Ringway on 8 to 22 February 1943. The course report states; 'Cpl Walton-Good, improved with pratice'.

He was posted to C Company, The 6th (Royal Welch) Parachute Battalion and later took part in the amphibious landings in Italy in September 1943, on board a mine layer, HMS Abdiel. Unfortunately, HMS Abdiel struck a mine in Taranto Harbour causing significant casualties and loss of life, including Cpl Walton.

Cpl Walton died at sea on 10 September 1943, aged 23.

He is commemorated on the Cassino Memorial.
