Private Alfred Hayes

Alfred Hayes was the son of George Richard and Lilian Hayes, of Blackley, Lancashire, he enlisted in the General Service Corps and volunteered for airborne forces.

His brother, Frank, 2615360 No. 2 Commando, Grenadier Guards was killed and buried at sea on 27 December 1941, aged 22 and is commemorated on the Brookwood Memorial.

Private Hayes successfully completed glider training and was posted to 12th (Airborne) Battalion, Devonshire Regiment, and took part in Operation Varsity (Rhine Crossing).

Pte Hayes was killed in action on 24 March 1945, aged 21, and was given a field burial at Hamminkeln, Germany, and was re-interred to Reichswald Forest War Cemetery on 12 April 1947.
