Lieutenant Alfred G Slade

Alfred George Slade was the son of Frederick George and Laura Wilmot (Heaman) Slade; husband of Thelma (Hake) Slade, of Burnham-on-Sea, Somerset. They married in October 1939 at Weston Super Mare. He was granted a commission and volunteered for airborne forces.

Lieutenant Slade successfully completed glider training and was posted to 12th (Airborne) Battalion, Devonshire Regiment and took part in Operation Varsity (Rhine Crossing).

Lt Slade was killed in action on 24 March 1945, age 32, and was given a field burial at Hamminkeln, Germany, and was re-interred to Reichswald Forest War Cemetery, Germany on 24 April 1947.
