Private Albert Wattam

19 Aug 1944

Albert Wattam was the son of William and Hilda Wattam (Horsman), of Doncaster; husband of Lucy Wattam (Madin), of Doncaster, Yorkshire, he enlisted in the General Service Corps and volunteered for airborne forces.

Private Wattam successfully completed parachute training at RAF Ringway on course number 78, from 14 to 24 August 1944. His course report stated “Popular and courageous, worthy of NCO rank”. He was posted to 9th Battalion, the Parachute Regiment, and took part in Operation Overlord (Normandy).

Pte Wattam was killed in action on 19 August 1944, aged 21, and was buried in Ranville War Cemetery, Calvados, France.
