Lance Corporal John Waring

20 Sep 1944

John Waring was the son of James and Bertha Waring and the husband of Ethel Waring, of Paynton, Cheshire. He enlisted in the Royal Army Service Corps, and volunteered for airborne forces.

Lance Corporal Waring successfully completed Air Despatcher training and was posted to 398 (Airborne) Divisional Composite Company, Royal Army Service Corps, and took part in Operation Market Garden (Arnhem).

L/Cpl Waring was killed in action on 20 September 1944, aged 35, when Stirling LK-548 was hit by Flak before reaching the drop zone, but still managed to drop its supplies on the ordered DZ, and was hit again and crashed in a field in front of the Verhoeven family house on Meuwerweg 3, Vorstenbosch, killing some of the RAF crew and both of the air despatchers. John Waring is buried in the Groesbeek Canadian War Cemetery, Gelderland, Netherlands.
