Corporal Thomas Edgar

Thomas Edgar, son of John and Margaret Edgar, of Stanwix, Carlisle, enlisted into The Border Regiment and volunteered for airborne forces.

Corporal Edgar successfully completed his Glider training and was posted to A Company, 1st (Airborne) Battalion, The Border Regt. He took part in Operation Market Garden (Arnhem).

Cpl Edgar was fatally wounded whilst clearing the Dennenoord House at Benedendorpsweg of enemy personnel. He was taken to a nearby Regimental Aid Post, where he subsequently died of his wounds on 25 September 1944, aged 27. For some reason he was originally buried as an unknown soldier, however recent research has identified him and a new headstone bearing his details was dedicated to him at a ceremony in September 2016, at the Arnhem Oosterbeek War Cemetery.
