Corporal Raymond D Egan

Raymond Egan, husband of Mary Egan, of Barnard Castle, County Durham, enlisted in the North Staffordshire Regiment and volunteered for airborne forces.

Corporal Egan successfully completed his glider training and was posted to D Company, 21 Platoon, 2nd Battalion, South Staffordshire Regiment and took part in Operation Market Garden (Arnhem).

Cpl Egan died of wounds on 20 September 1944, aged 23, having been badly wounded two days before whilst leading a section trying to locate and eliminate a German machine gun post on Veritasweg, Oosterbeek and was given a field burial by Reverend Daniel McGowan at Oosterbeek. He was re-interred to Arnhem Oosterbeek War Cemetery on 29 November 1945.
