Unit No 46 Group RAF

46 Group was formed in January 1944 as part of RAF Transport Command and, along with 38 Group, provided crucial air support to British airborne forces in the latter stages of World War II.

Its squadrons, which were completely equipped with Dakota aircraft, were heavily involved in the airborne operations for Normandy, Arnhem and the Rhine Crossing. Their duties included dropping paratroopers into combat, towing gliderborne airborne troops into combat, resupply operations and casualty evacuations.

The squadrons in the group comprised:
No 48 Squadron RAF
No 233 Squadron RAF
No 271 Squadron RAF
No 512 Squadron RAF
No 575 Squadron RAF
No 437 Squadron RCAF (from September 1944)
