
Reformed within a redesigned 16th Air Assault Brigade, parachute battalions were obliged to enact their Utrinque Paratus – ‘Ready for Anything’ motto becoming involved in new security operations in evolving and uncertain operational theatres in Afghanistan and Iraq.
16 Air Assault Brigade formally took over as the lead formation of Task Force Helmand from 4th Mechanized Brigade on Sunday 10 October 2010. They were in theatre until April 2011.
In early 2002, forces from 16 Air Assault Brigade took a leading role in the International Assistance Security Force deployed to assist the new Afghan Interim Authority with the provision of security and stability in Kabul.

Both 2 and 3 PARA deployed to southern Afghanistan’s Helmand Province in 2008, forming all-arms battle groups over 1,150 men strong.

16 Air Assault Brigade deployed with the 3 PARA battle group on Operation HERRRICK 4 in April 2006 to Afghanistan. Anticipating a peace support operation in the southern Helmand Province, it was instead required to fight a brutal ‘break-in’ battle.

During February 2003 16 Air Assault Brigade formed part of the massive build up of force assembling north of Kuwait City for Operation TELIC, the second ground war directed by an Anglo-American Coalition against Iraq.

In August 2 PARA were deployed with 16 Air Assault Brigade to Macedonia on Op BESSEMER. After growing tensions in FYROM between the ethnic Albanian National Liberation Army (NLA) and the Macedonian Army (ARM), a NATO brokered peace agreement was signed between the two parties.
