
Kosovo was the first operational deployment for 5th Airborne Brigade apart from the Falklands and Northern Ireland for 17 years and reflected the British Army’s increasing commitment to dampen ethnic conflict while shoring up failed states in the Balkans and Sierra Leone.

On 7 May 2000 1 PARA group less A company but reinforced by D Company 2 PARA was deployed to Sierra Leone at very short notice to evacuate UK and other civilians threatened by Revolutionary United Front (RUF) rebels and other insurgents around Freetown.

In May 1999 1 PARA was directed to prepare for possible operations in Kosovo following the NATO air strikes directed at Serbia to prevent the ‘ethnic cleansing’ of Kosovar Albanians by Serbs.

In the immediate aftermath of Rwanda’s hard fought civil war and the genocide which accompanied it, some 650 UK personnel from 5 Airborne Brigade joined the UN Assistance Mission to Rwanda (UNAMIR) as part of Operation GABRIEL.
