1948 - 1955

16th Parachute Brigade Group is formed after the disbandment of 6th Airborne Division with three battalions of the Parachute Regiment and serves primarily in Europe, Iraq and the Canal Zone in Egypt.

Malaya

In 1954 the 22nd Special Air Service (SAS) Regiment required a replacement ‘Sabre’ (fighting) squadron for deployment during the ‘Emergency’ in Malaya. The Parachute Regiment were invited to provide the personnel. Some 80 officers and men were selected from a large number of volunteers to form the Independent Parachute squadron under command of Major EWD Coventry.

Canal Zone Egypt

Canal Zone Egypt

In October 1951 the 16th Independent Parachute Brigade flew into Egypt with its three Parachute Battalions following the overthrow of King Farouk by General Neguib and Colonel Abd al-Nasser. Anti-British sentiment had accompanied the coup d’etat. The rest of the brigade with its heavy equipment arrived by sea.
