William Vye Townsend was the husband of Edna May (Bryson) Townsend, of Northumberland. Married in January 1940, in Northumberland. He enlisted in the Royal Army Medical Corps and volunteered for airborne forces.
Private Townsend successfully completed parachute training at RAF Ringway on course number 86, from 4 to 19 October 1943 and was posted to Royal Army Medical Corps, attached to 9th Battalion the Parachute Regiment. He took part Operation Overlord (D day landings).
Pte Townsend was killed in action on 8 June 1944, aged 25, and is commemorated on the Bayeux Memorial to the missing.
