William Gibson, son of Richard and Elizabeth Gibson; husband of Mary Smith Gibson, of Bo’ness, West Lothian, enlisted into the Highland Light Infantry and then volunteered for airborne forces.
Private Gibson successfully completed his parachute training at RAF Ringway, on course 130 and 131, his course report stated that he was "Rather nervous but keen". He was posted to A Company, 7th Battalion, The Parachute Regiment. He took part in Operation Overlord (D Day landings), Ardennes (Battle of the Bulge) and Operation Varsity (Rhine Crossing).
Pte Gibson was killed in action on 24 March 1945, aged 25. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Groesbeek Memorial.
