Second Lieutenant Richard De Courcy Peele

Richard Peele was the son of Charles Richard de Courcy Peele and Evelyn Margaret Peele, of Chiswick Park, London. He was Head Boy of Rugby School, 1941-1942 and a Scholar of Trinity College, Oxford.

Richard Peele was granted an emergency commission on 1 April 1944 serving with the Parachute Regiment. He qualified as a parachutist at RAF Ringway on Course 113 which ran from 24 April to 7 May and was posted as Platoon Commander of 7 Platoon C Company 11th Parachute Battalion. The Battalion took part in Operation Market Garden and parachuted into Holland at Ginkel Heath near Arnhem as part of the 4th Parachute Brigade on 18 September.

2nd Lt Peele was killed in action on 22 September 1944 and initially given a field burial at Garden Acacialaan near Oosterbeek. He is now buried at the Oosterbeek War Cemetery, Arnhem.
