Leslie Victor Townes was the son of Walter Alfred and Emily Kathleen Townes, of Mistley, Essex, he enlisted in the Essex Regiment and volunteered for airborne forces.
Private Townes successfully completed parachute training at RAF Ringway on course number 47 from 18 January to 1 February 1943. His course report stated “Good, worked well, with good results”. He was posted to B Company, 9th Battalion, The Parachute Regiment, and took part in Operation Overlord (Normandy).
Pte Townes was killed in action on 23 July 1944, aged 22, and was buried in Ranville War Cemetery, Calvados, France.
