Lance Sergeant John W Humphreys

John William Humphreys was the son of Thomas and Christina Humphreys, of Aston Abbotts, Buckinghamshire.

He served in The Ox and Bucks Light Infantry before volunteering for The Parachute Regiment in World War II and qualified as a military parachutist on course 85 which ran at RAF Ringway from 29 September to 10 October 1943.

Posted to C Coy, 7th Para Bn, John Humphreys fought in the campaigns to liberate North West Europe, from Normandy in 1944 to the final mass allied parachute and glider assault of World War II, Operation Varsity, on 24 March 1945, and the subsequent advance to the Baltic. By this time Humphreys was a sergeant with 9 Platoon, C Coy.

He died of wounds sustained during this last campaign, possibly at Wunstorf, on 29 June 1945 and is now buried at Aston Abbotts Churchyard.
