John Joseph McCullagh, son of Joseph and Margaret McCullagh, of Middlesborough, Yorkshire, enlisted in the Durham Light Infantry and then volunteered for airborne forces.
Private McCullagh successfully completed his parachute training and was posted to 11th Battalion Parachute Regiment. He took part in Operation Market Garden (Arnhem).
Pte McCullagh was killed in action on 22 September 1944, aged 23. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Groesbeek Memorial to the missing.
