John E Harper enlisted into 2 Field Regiment, Royal Artillery and volunteered for airborne forces in early 1944.
He completed parachute training course 108 at RAF Ringway between 19 and 31 March 1944 and was posted to 8 Platoon, C Company, The 3rd Battalion, The Parachute Regiment.
L/Col Harper saw active service on Operation Market Garden, where he was taken a Prisoner of War.
He was demobbed in February 1946.
