Sergeant John E Fiddler

John Edward Fiddler, son of John Henry and Lilian Prescott Fiddler, of Preston, Lancashire, enlisted into the General Service Corps before being posted to the Royal Artillery. He volunteered for airborne forces in November 1943.

Sergeant Fiddler qualified as a military parachutist on Course 96 which ran from 16 to 30 December 1943, his course report states: ‘Would make a good leader; an efficient pupil.’

Posted to 2 Platoon, A Company, 7th (Light Infantry) Parachute Battalion. He took part in the Normandy airborne landings, during Op Overlord.

Sgt Fiddler was killed on 6 June 1944, in the initial fighting in Benouville aged 23 years old. He is now buried in Benouville Churchyard, Normandy.
