Jack Albert George Basham was the son of Albert George and Emily (Harris) Basham, of Braintree. He enlisted in the Royal Norfolk Regiment and volunteered for airborne forces.
His father, Sgt Albert G Basham fought with 4th Bn., the Suffolk Regiment in WW1, and served, aged 51, as a Leading Aircraftsman in the RAF in WW2.
Private Basham successfully completed glider training and was posted to 2nd (Airborne) Battalion, Oxford and Bucks Light Infantry and took part in operations Overlord (D Day landings), the Ardennes and Operation Varsity (Rhine Crossing).
Pte Basham was wounded in each of his previous actions and was killed in action on 24 March 1945, aged 23, and was given a field burial at Hamminkeln and was re-interred to Reichswald Forest War Cemetery on 21 March 1947.
