Harold Langton Kirkham was the son of Alfred and Elizabeth Kirkham, of Bolton. He enlisted into The Loyal Regiment (North Lancashire) and volunteered for airborne forces.
Private Kirkham successfully completed his parachute training and was posted to Defence Platoon, 4th Brigade, The Parachute Regiment, and took part in Operation Market Garden (Arnhem).
Pte Kirkham was killed in action on 19 September 1944, aged 30, and was given a field burial in a massed grave of 10 casualties 30 yards inside a wood on the Sonnenberg estate, Oosterbeek and was re-interred to Arnhem Oosterbeek War Cemetery on 23 October 1945.
