Ernest Victor Thompson, son of Ernest and Florence Thompson, of Sutton, Suffolk, enlisted in The King’s Royal Rifle Corps and then volunteered for airborne forces.
Sergeant Thompson successfully completed his parachute training at RAF Ringway, on course number 63, from 4 to 17 May 1943, and his course report stated “Excellent in every way”. He was then posted to 3 platoon, 21st Independent Company, The Parachute Regiment, and took part in Operation Market Garden (Arnhem).
Sgt Thompson is known to have been killed near the junction of Stationsweg and Utrechtseweg on 23 September 1944, aged 25, and is commemorated on the Groesbeek Memorial to the missing.
