Sapper David Gray

David Gray was born and lived in Dundee. He enlisted in the Royal Engineers and volunteered for Airborne forces. Sapper Gray successfully completed parachute training at RAF Ringway on course number 75, from 26 July to 6 August 1943.

He was posted to B Troop, 1st Parachute Squadron, Corps of Royal Engineers, and took part in Operation Torch (North Africa), Operation Husky (Sicily), Operation Slapstick (Italy) and Operation Market Garden (Arnhem).

Spr Gray was killed in action by a sniper on 19 September 1944, aged 22, in the Van Limburg Stirum school near the Arnhem Rhine Bridge. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Groesbeek memorial to the missing.
