Daniel D Treadgold was born in Walthamstow, London.
After the street where he lived was destroyed during the Blitz, he was evacuated to Sandford in Somerset. Here he acquired a West Country accent, which he later became well known for.
David enlisted in the army 21 December 1955 in Bristol.
