Alfred Guthrie was the son of John and Ada Guthrie, and the husband of Sarah Guthrie, of St Anthony’s, Newcastle-on-Tyne. He enlisted in the Durham Light Infantry and volunteered for airborne forces.
Private Guthrie successfully completed his parachute training at RAF Kabrit, in Egypt and was posted to Defence Platoon, 4th Parachute Brigade, and took part in Operation Market Garden (Arnhem).
Pte Guthrie was killed in action, aged 27, on 20 September 1944 and was given a field burial in a mass grave 30 yards inside a wood on the Sonnenberg Estate, Oosterbeek, and was re-interred to Arnhem Oosterbeek War Cemetery on 23 October 1945.
