The Distinguished Flying Medal was awarded until 1993 to non-commissioned British military personnel (ie ranks other than commissioned officers) for acts of valour, courage or devotion to duty whilst flying in active operations against the enemy.
It was also previously awarded to non-commissioned ranks of some Commonwealth countries.
The medal was replaced by the Distinguished Flying Cross following the harmonisation of the gallantry award system in 1993.
