Index Hamilcar Glider

Made by General Aircraft Ltd during the war to meet the requirements of airborne troops. The prototype first flew in the spring of 1942. This glider was the longest (67ft) wooden aircraft constructed during the war. It was designed to carry light tanks or combinations of vehicle equipments. Because of its size the Hamilcar needed a powerful aircraft to tow it, and in this respect the Halifax had an excellent record. This glider took part in major airborne operations of World War II. A powered version was made after the war but never went into production.
